Tips For Cleaning Your Area Rugs

Posted on: 9 March 2016

Area rugs add a warm and comfortable feeling to any room, helping to tie it all together and improve the overall décor of the space. Here are some tips for keeping your area rugs clean.

Know What Type of Rug it is

The first thing you need to do is consider what type of rug you are cleaning. The material it is made of will determine the best method of cleaning it. For example, a woven rug may have stitching that is starting to come apart. You don't want to put it in the washing machine as-is or scrub at the rug vigorously with a stiff brush. Instead, you should put it in a laundry bag, then put that in the washing machine. Hand-knotted and Oriental rugs, on the other hand, tend to do better with vacuuming and gentle hand cleaning, as opposed to being put in the washing machine.

Vacuum and Shake the Rugs Regularly

Regardless of the type of rug you have, shaking it and vacuuming it should be your first course of action. The more often you vacuum the rug, the less buildup of dirt and grime you will need to remove from it. Before vacuuming it, take the rug outside and shake it or beat it a few times. This gets rid of the surface dirt and dust from the rug. Now bring it back inside to vacuum it. Go over the rug a few times if it has a complicated weave so you can clean it thoroughly.

Clean Up Spills Right Away

When you get a spill on your rug, just like with carpeting, you need to clean it up immediately. Soak up the liquid or moisture before it sets into the rug. Grab a clean towel and begin blotting at the spill. Never rub the towel into the rug, or you will set the stain and make it harder to remove. Keep blotting with dry sections of the towel, and get a new towel when needed. Once you have blotted as much of it as possible, you can clean the rug as you normally would.

Shampoo the Rugs Occasionally

All rugs need occasional shampooing or washing, whether you do it by hand or put it in the washing machine. Check the rug's label to determine the right way to care for it. Larger area rugs don't fit in the machine, so they will need to be hand-washed. Use a carpet and rug shampoo product and a wet-vac. You can also use the shampoo with a scrub brush, then rinse and dry the rug when you're finished.

Carpeting is a huge investment. If you don't care for your carpeting properly, that investment will need to be made again in the near future. So, how do you care for a carpet to ensure that it lasts as long as possible? Is there a proper way to vacuum? Which method of deep cleaning is safest for your carpet? I created this blog after learning all about carpeting care from a friend who owns a carpet cleaning company. I have included tips that she has shared with me and advice that will help to protect your carpet from damage that could actually be caused by cleaning.
