3 Things You Can Do To Protect Your Carpet From Stains

Posted on: 8 March 2016

Spills are inevitable in every home. This is especially true if you have young children or pets in the home. This is why it is so important that every homeowner know how to properly clean up spills so that they don't damage the carpet permanently. Here are some things you need to know about caring for your carpets.

1. Always Dab a Stain, Never Rub

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is rubbing a stain on the carpet. When you do this it causes the dye to sink deeper and deeper into the fibers. You can actually create more damage by rubbing a stain. This is why you should always get out a clean towel and dab the area. Once you dab with one side of the towel, use a different side so that you don't transfer the dye that you just got onto the towel back into the carpet. It may take many dabs to get results, but be patient; this is the safest way to care for your carpets.

2. Use The Right Temperature Of Water To Clean The Spill

Temperature plays a huge role in breaking up the stain so that it doesn't permanently damage the carpet. The item that spilled will affect what temperature of water you should use to clean the spill. For example, if you have a milk based spill you need to use warm water to clean it. Warm water will help to break up the enzymes in the milk so that it will be soft enough to remove. If you try to use cold water to clean the spill it will cause the milk to harden and make it difficult to remove. Conversely, if you have a stain that is made of blood you should never use warm water. Warm water will cause the blood to sink deeper in the carpet and make it worse to get out. Instead, use only cold water and dab at the stain until it is fully removed from the carpet.

3. Keep The Area Moist

A wet stain is much easier to remove than a dry stain. This means that if you get a stain that you cannot immediately clean up you should put a moist towel on it and keep it wet until you can get to it. This will prevent the dye from completely soaking into the carpet.

By understanding these simple things you can better protect your carpet from stains. However, if a stain is too tough for you to remove on your own, consider calling a company like Pro-Steam Plus Carpet Cleaning to professionally clean your carpet for you.
