A smelly dishwasher can leave your dishes with a foul odor. Unfortunately, sending your dishes through a second cycle won't remove the odors. If your dishwasher has started smelling funky, you may need to sanitize it before washing any more dishes. Here are a few quick ways to remove the grime and foul odors, naturally.

Your dishwasher has hundreds of small cracks and crevices that can collect germs and bacteria. Vinegar will get deep into to spaces to get rid of the source of those foul odors. You'll need a bottle of vinegar and a glass bowl.

  1. Remove all the dishes from your dishwasher.
  2. Pour about 2 cups of vinegar into your glass bowl.
  3. Place the glass bowl on the top shelf of your dishwasher.
  4. Turn your dishwasher on and send it through one complete wash cycle.
  5. Remove the bowl from the dishwasher.
  6. Repeat once a month to keep your dishwasher clean and fresh.

Lemon Juice

Ordinary lemon juice will remove odors from your dishwasher, and help you clean it by loosening up the grimy buildup.

  4. Leave the dishwasher closed for about 5 minutes to allow the steam to work.
  5. Open the door and wipe the inside of your dishwasher with a clean sponge.

Baking Soda

To remove tough odors, like mold, you may want to use baking soda. You can add a bit of lemon juice to increase the effectiveness.

  • Baking soda
  • Water or lemon juice

Your dishwasher goes through a lot of wear and tear. Germs and bacteria can build up quickly, especially under the blades and around the gaskets. Keep your dishwasher clean and smelling fresh using these natural cleaning methods. Clean your dishwasher at least once a month to prevent foul odors and dirt from building up. Try to add it into your regular house cleaning schedule.
